CASE for SEA: 2024 Highlights and Impact

2024 has been a remarkable year for the project Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE for SEA). As we reflect on the milestones achieved, we are proud to share how our collective efforts have driven the energy transition across Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Viet Nam, and the region as a whole.

Advancing Regional Collaboration for Energy Transition

At the heart of CASE for SEA’s mission lies a commitment to fostering collaboration and enabling a just energy transition. This year, our regional team played a pivotal role in:

Publishing groundbreaking studies on: “Navigating the Transition to Net-zero Emissions in Southeast Asia – Energy Security, the Role of Gaseous Energy Carriers and Renewables-based Electrification” and “Electricity market designs in Southeast Asia: Harnessing opportunities for renewable energy growth in Indonesia, Thailand, Viet Nam, and the Philippines” that have laid the foundation for a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Southeast Asia, offering a roadmap for countries to accelerate their transition to a low-carbon economy.

Convening stakeholders: CASE and ETP organised a regional workshop on Electricity Market Designs for renewables in Southeast Asia to facilitate knowledge sharing and policy dialogue on innovative electricity market designs to accelerate the integration of renewable energy sources in the region.

Country Spotlights: Driving Impact Locally

Indonesia

Indonesia made significant progress in advancing the energy transition:

Hosted the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week 2024 (ISEW), which brought together policymakers, business leaders, and communities to discuss strategies for achieving Indonesia Emas and Net Zero Emissions. The event emphasised inclusive decision-making and socio-economic impacts of the energy transition, fostering collaboration across sectors.

Premiered Jejak Kiara, a short film highlighting the importance of collective efforts in accelerating the energy transition. The movie’s evocative storytelling inspires action and raises public awareness about the role of all stakeholders in creating a sustainable future.

Philippines

The Philippines took bold steps to shape a cleaner and more sustainable energy future:

Held a Validation Workshop on Long-Term Energy Scenarios, where over 90 participants from government, civil society, and renewable energy sectors collaborated to refine visions and scenarios for the country’s energy transition. These scenarios are part of an ongoing study aimed at guiding long-term planning.

Supported the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) Conference 2024, which brought together over 150 key stakeholders to strengthen renewable energy compliance and foster partnerships. The conference featured plenary sessions, panel discussions, and business matching activities to drive renewable energy development.

Thailand

In Thailand, CASE has contributed significantly to policy dialogues and public awareness:

Released a comprehensive study on agrivoltaics, outlining its potential to enhance food and energy security.

Engaged youth and young professionals through events such as The Energy Shift: Transition with Opportunities, where industry experts shared insights on the energy transition and highlighted the golden opportunities that await in this field.

Viet Nam

In Viet Nam, CASE focused on scaling renewable energy solutions:

Co-hosted the Viet Nam Energy Transition Forum 2024, together with the State Agency for Technology and Innovation (Ministry of Science and Technology). This forum aimed to facilitate the transfer of new technologies and the adoption of technological innovations for renewable energy (RE) projects.

Collaborated with Vietnamese journalists from various news agencies in Viet Nam on a press trip focused on ‘Journalism and Just Energy Transition’. This event provided new knowledge about renewable energy and energy transition, while also enhancing journalistic skills for writing accurate, objective, and effective reports in the digital age. Additionally, journalists gained a deeper understanding of their role in promoting energy transition in Viet Nam.

Launched a study to assess capacity building needs, with the overall objective of identifying the needs of key stakeholders and providing suggestions for feasible measures to better support the main actors involved in Viet Nam’s energy transition (ET) progress.

Driving Impact: Collaborative Pathways to Energy Transition

In 2024, CASE strengthened its commitment to sustainable change by fostering collaboration with diverse stakeholders. Key milestones included:

Regional team presenting the Southeast Asia Information Platform for Energy Transition (SIPET) at the 2024 Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW): SIPET got some spotlight at Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week 2024. Participants, ranging from renewable energy businesses to students, praised the platform for its valuable data on renewable energy and energy transition initiatives across the region. Its tools, such as the Power Transition Progress Tool and Power Sector Snapshot, were highlighted as useful resources for research and fostering understanding of energy transition progress.

Video campaign, such as ‘Human of Energy Transition,’ which reached thousands of people, raised awareness about energy transition challenges and solutions by using real stories from people in Thailand. These campaigns have demonstrated the power of storytelling in driving social change and accelerating the energy transition.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While 2024 marked significant progress, there’s still much to be done. Next year, CASE for SEA aims to:

  • Expand its research on emerging technologies and innovative energy solutions.
  • Deepen partnerships with stakeholders to accelerate implementation.
  • Continue empowering journalists and youth to take an active role in the energy transition.

The achievements of 2024 wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of our partners, stakeholders, and communities.
