‘Vision 2030 for Renewable Energy Deployment in Thailand’ workshop sparks collaboration and aligns perspectives for Renewable Energy Future

Bangkok, 26 May 2025 – The project Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) and the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) project, both implemented by GIZ, jointly hosted a one-day workshop titled ‘Vision 2030 for Renewable Energy Deployment in Thailand’ at Siam Hall, 6th floor, Eastin Grand Hotel Phayathai.

The event, attended by leading experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, aimed to discuss the critical role of renewable energy in strengthening Thailand’s energy security and achieving carbon neutrality in the power sector by 2030.

The workshop opened with welcoming speeches from key figures including Watcharin Boonyarit, Deputy Director General of the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO),  Johannes Kerner, Economic Cooperation Advisor to the German Embassy in Thailand, and Sascha Oppowa, Project Director of CASE, GIZ.

A representative from the Embassy of Germany in Bangkok, Johannes, remarked at the event

“Today’s workshop serves as a key milestone in these efforts; it is a space for sharing research insights, discussing investments and regulating priorities. Everyone’s presence here today underscores the importance of – and commitment to – collaboration in advancing energy transition. In this regard, I would like to assure you that Germany remains a reliable partner for Thailand for energy transition through technical cooperation, political dialogue and long-term collaboration.”

Sascha Oppowa, Project Director of CASE, GIZ, also expressed, “this Vision 2030 workshop is a timely opportunity to reflect on progress and shape the way forward. We’re here to examine how Thailand can bolster energy security through means of enhanced renewable energies, and achieve the carbon neutrality target in the power sector.”

The event also introduced Vision 2030 as a new study project to support collaboration among key stakeholders to realise Thailand’s long-term renewable energy vision. In her remarks on the new project, Insa Illgen, Project Director of TGC EMC, called for joint efforts to enhance Thailand’s renewable energy capabilities and set a roadmap for sustainable power development through 2050.

“TGC EMC is working together with our partners from KMUTT and Agora Energiewende on the Vision 2030 report that will demonstrate the roadmap for not only Thailand’s half-term goal of 2030 – on contributions to increase the share of renewable energy and power systems of Thailand, but also the long-term strategy to meet the country’s sustainable power development targets of 2050. These topics account for much of today’s discussions, and we would like to use this opportunity to invite everyone to share any inputs or questions that we should take into account in finalising the publication.”

The workshop’s discussions and insights will be contributed to the upcoming TGC-EMC report titled ‘Vision 2030: Priorities for Renewables Deployment in the Thai Power System.’
